Episode 193: Bryson and the Beast
Thursday Apr 23, 2020
Thursday Apr 23, 2020
It's 1991 and you've just enjoyed seeing the Disney classic, Beauty and the Beast. As the credits begin to scroll and you're getting ready to leave, suddenly you hear the song, "Beauty and the Beast", sung by Angela Lansbury in the film, however, this version is being sung by Peabo Bryson and Celine Dion. No, your ears are not playing a trick on you, that actually is a pop version of the beautiful song from the film. Disney did this to have a version of the song more amenable to being played on the radio. And they would continue to do this for fifteen animated movie songs from 1991 all the way to 2019 (and possibly beyond). Discussing these songs, for good or for ill, is the Geek Salad crew with episode 193: Bryson and the Beast.
Join Andy, Mike, Joe, Katherine, and increasingly regular guest Todd, as they go over all 15 songs and decide whether they were an upgrade to the film version, a downgrade, or just... whatever. Did Peabo really deserve to win two Grammy awards for his versions? And which song do the whole crew agree is just awful beyond measure? Listen in and find out.
