Episode 138: The Discount Defenders!

Tuesday, January 24th, 2017

Superheroes have been on television for almost as long as there has been television. However, things are considerably different now than when Superman would bust through cheap sets and Batman danced the Batusi. To go over the current crop of excellent (and not so excellent) superhero TV shows, join Andy, Mike, and Joe in Geek Salad episode 138: The Discount Defenders!

From DC's "Arrowverse" to Marvel's Defenders, the Geek Salad crew express their love, indifference, or dislike for all of the current comic-inspired TV shows (or as many as they can remember, anyway). Which Supergirl character do Andy and Mike completely disagree about? What do Mike and Joe think about the most recent seasons of Arrow? The answers to these questions and more (obviously) can be found within.

Sweet Christmas!

Episode 115 Deleted Scene (Comic Con Chat)

Sunday, August 9th, 2015

Here it is, a little late, but still fun all the same. Cut from episode 115, but saved from the editing room floor (actually a hard drive), is the discussion the Geek Salad crew had on some of the trailers that had their debut at Comic Con.

Will Andy's ambivalence for all things DC keep him from enjoying the Batman v Superman trailer? Will Deadpool swear up a storm in his trailer? If you're listening to this clip, you probably already know the answers. Still, it's a fun conversation.

Episode 111: Shawarma…ASSEMBLE!!!!

Monday, April 27th, 2015

We're here to talk to you about the Avengers Initiative....

...and with those words, the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked into high gear!  From the 2008 release of Iron Man, to last year's surprise hit Guardians of the Galaxy, the MCU has been kicking butt throughout the movie industry.

...and now Geek Salad is here to rank them...

Thanks to our friends on Facebook, the team of Andy, Mike G., Joe, and Katherine count down from 10 to 1 the favorite films in both Phase 1 and Phase 2, leading up to the May 1st release of Avengers: Age of Ultron.  Which movies will end up lower than expected?  Which movies got more love than usual?  And who will rank supreme?

Then, stay tuned for a trio of Trailer Parks, where the team discuss the latest trailers from Star Wars Episode VII:  The Force Awakens, Batman vs. Superman:  Dawn of Justice, and Ant-Man.

Episode 102: Infinite Crisis in the Age of Ultron

Thursday, September 11th, 2014

The battle lines are drawn! The normal unity of the Geek Salad crew is shattered! What could possibly cause such a rift? Why Marvel vs DC, of course. It's Geek Salad episode 102: Infinite Crisis in the Age of Ultron. It's Andy, Mike G, and special guest Katherine for Marvel, Joe and Mike C for DC, and Jim being the great and powerful Oz... or maybe just the moderator. Will Marvel come out on top? Will DC triumph? Who cares as long as it's entertaining!

Episode 99: Almost There!

Saturday, June 28th, 2014

Superman had his origin told in the very first issue. Batman took six issues of Detective Comics before his backstory was relayed. Amateurs! Geek Salad has taken 99 episodes before finally giving their origin story in episode 99: Almost There! Join Andy, both Mikes, and Joe as they drink deeply from the chalice of self-congratulation and look back at the first 98 episodes of Geek Salad. The gang shares how Geek Salad came to be, some of their favorite moments, as well as moments they wish they could call "Do-over" on.

They do manage to squeeze in a quick Stupid Stupid afterwards on some action figures that should never have existed, as well as taking on a TV trailer for the upcoming CW show, "The Flash".

Episode 98 (part 1): Big Fun Happy Happy Murderworld Super Time!

Monday, May 19th, 2014

In 1963, Stan Lee decided to create a new team of superheroes. Unable to come up with a unique way that they all got their powers, though, he just decided that they were just born with their abilities. He grabbed Jack Kirby for the artwork, and behold, the X-Men were born!

Now, 51 years later, they have gained the ultimate honor! They are the subject of not just a Geek Salad episode, but a two-parter! So come join Andy, both Mikes, Jim, and Joe, as they discuss and debate their favorite X-Men comic stories, the pros and cons of the first three X-Men movies, and also have some giggles coming up with the most useless mutant abilities. Then come back in a couple of weeks for Part 2.

Episode 88: Don’t Touch Lola

Saturday, September 28th, 2013

First there was Iron Man which kicked off the Marvel movie universe. Now Marvel and Disney have aired the new TV series to continue events started in The Avengers, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Now, if we, the fans, were writing the episodes, what kinds of wacky adventures might Agent Coulson and his band of intrepid adventurers get into? That is the question that Andy, Mike G, and Jim attempt to answer in Geek Salad episode 88: Don't Touch Lola.

The crew take on this task with their usual poise, thoughtfulness, and deep insight. Will Andy bring up the most inadvertently hilarious Marvel superhero, the Whizzer? Will Jim make a DC Cab reference? Will Mike mention the TARDIS? Listen in and see!

(BTW, as regular listeners to the show will know, the answer to all three of those questions is 'Absolutely!')

A Few Marvel/DC Thoughts from San Diego ComicCon

Sunday, July 21st, 2013

So this is all based from sources that I read, so I'm sure I'll get something wrong here or there:

Thor: The Dark World: Early word is that it looks underwhelming.  We said that 2 years ago and were proven extremely wrong on that.  I've really enjoyed Chris Hemsworth's interpretation of Thor (adding more humor than we were expecting) and Tom Hiddleson is fucking genius....worst case, it turns into Iron Man 2.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier: The concept art is selling this movie right now.  It should be as good as the first movie....and as long as they get the nationality of the Winder Soldier's handlers right, it's still a thousand times better than the Matt Salinger movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy: In a conversation I had with a friend, he was worried that it would get weird by being left in the hands of the director of Tromeo and Juliette.  First off...Disney isn't going to be giving James Gunn a very long leash.  Secondly, the movie features a talking tree and a gun toting raccoon....what could possibly be weird about that?

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Joss Whedon is going to be fully involved in this...Coulson's back (resurrection, apparently, totally blow off), as is Agent Hill (Colbie Smulders will be needing a job after How I Met Your Mother wraps this season).  And Ron Glass from Firefly plays an agent, opening the door for everybody from Whedon's stock players to make an appearance!

X-Men: Days of Futures Past: First off, in 2011 when we had 4 superhero movies released, X-Men First Class turned in the best production!  Now, we're melding the two casts together.  It could be awesome, or it could be a convoluted mess.  But Peter Dinklage and Sentinels should balance it towards the "awesome" column!

The Flash/JLA:  Imagine, if you will, that Hawkeye got a stand-alone movie before Thor.  Then, imagine that you spent two hours watching a guy who's sole ability is to be really good at archery.  Don't get me wrong, I looooove me some Hawkeye.  But Thor needed the added benefit of being fully drawn out in a movie prior to being featured in The Avengers.  Now, replace "Hawkeye" with "The Flash" and "Thor" with "Wonder Woman."  The Flash is a decent character (albeit, with a rouge's gallery that consists of villains too stupid for Superman to face), but I fear for this turning into another Green Lantern, and nobody wants that...

Superman/Batman: I guess the bigger question is, do they just simply replace Christian Bale with somebody else (and with a 2015 release date, they better get cracking at finding that person) and continue the continuity of the Nolanverse, or start fresh?  I don't think that Batman's origin needs to be retold again, but establishing what type of Batman this will end up being (Nolan, Burton, Schumacher, or *shudder* West) remains the bigger question.  This is definitely a step in the right direction, but with Man of Steel struggling to hit the $300 million domestic marker (and fall substantially short of the $1 Billion world marker that Iron Man 3 hit earlier in the summer) they will need to tread lightly and really have a plan going in to all of this....

What are your thoughts?

Go forth and be nerdful!

Andy
